Mineral Processing Division

Fraser Alexander`s entry into minerals processing occurred in coal washing as early as 1986 and expanded in the 2000`s, when Mine Waste Solutions, an associate company undertook to design, build, own and operate a gold mine tailings dump, carbon-in-pulp, beneficiation facility at the Stilfontein gold mine. This facility was commissioned in 2003 and processed some 700 000 tons of reclaimed tailings a month until 2007, when it was sold to Simmer and Jack Ltd.

By 2005, Fraser Alexander had consolidated operations on the coal processing arena implementing coal washing facilities within a Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) model, in the Witbank/eMalahleni region.

A recognition of the growing market trend in the mining sector to outsource operation and maintenance of mineral processing plants, led to the strategic decision in 2007 to establish a fully-fledged Minerals Processing Division. This was a natural extension to our service offering as, apart from the experience gained in the previous minerals processing initiatives, it builds on many of the key competencies that create Fraser Alexander`s unique value proposition to our customers.

We now manage a number of processing facilities in the coal and precious metals sectors, with a service offering encompassing:

  • Plant operability review at design stage
  • Preparing for, and participating in, commissioning of plants built by contractors
  • Operating and maintaining plants on an outsource basis best suited to the customer
  • Overall metallurgical, engineering, quality control, administrative, procurement and asset management of mineral beneficiation plants and all associated activities.

All the plants are operated to the exacting standards of the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management  System as well as the OHSAS 18001:1999 Integrated Safety Management System, and accreditation can be sought if so required by the Employer.

We will, in future, be expanding our footprint into areas other than coal and precious metals, and into other parts of the mineral beneficiation value chain and other geographic areas, utilising a variety of business models specifically tailored to meet each customer`s needs.
